Samuel Marshall Frantz
Marshall Frantz (1890-1953) was an American illustrator with a Norman Rockwell style born in Kiev, Russia on Dec. 25, 1890. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators (NYC). While based in NYC, Frantz illustrated many novels and short stories in magazines and newspapers such as The Delineator, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, Good Housekeeping, Colliers, Liberty or The Saturday Evening Post. His cover paintings appeared on pulp magazines, such as Everybody's Magazine, Big Chief Stories, Red Star Western, Star Western, and The Argosy. In 1922-1923, he did 9 illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short stories. From 1924 to 1926 he was listed in the national registry of Advertising Arts & Crafts, published by Kirby & Lee. His new art studio was at 121 West 23rd Street. This was near to the studios of Rudolph Zirm, John F. Gould, Walter Baumhofer, George Rozen and his twin brother Jerome Rozen. About 1937 he moved to Southern California and settled in Van Nuys. He died there on April 15, 1953.
